... that he overcame the one barrier to establishing relationship with us, a barrier for which we are responsible, and a barrier we are powerless to overcome. That barrier is sin.
All honest people will agree about one thing. No one is perfect. We often fail to live up to our own standards let alone those of a holy and just God. The Bible confirms what we know in our hearts to be true:

...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 |
God's Word is clear. We have all sinned. Sin separates us from God and from the life He created us to experience. In a sense, God's own character backs him into a corner. On the one hand He is just and must punish sin. On the other hand, He loves us. If he didn't love us, he could just ignore us. If he wasn't perfect in character, he could ignore our mis-deeds. But he does love us and he is holy and just. He wants to forgive us and to restore the relationship of love and trust that He created us to experience. God has solved that problem in the person of Jesus Christ, God's only Son.
