For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8,9 For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. As the Scriptures tell us, "Anyone who believes in him will not be disappointed." Romans 10:9-11 |
A person who sits in the airport terminal with a ticket in hand may believe that the airplane can be trusted to deliver its passengers to the proper destination. Yet no benefit will be realized until one commits their life to the airplane by getting on board.
It is possible to know about Jesus, that He died for us so we would not have to die and that he rose from the dead to guarantee eternal life for us. But it is not enough to intellectually agree with that truth. Much like the passenger sitting in the terminal, we simply are not depending on Jesus to do anything for us.
We are like the airplane passenger in another way. We have been issued a boarding pass, an invitation to transfer our trust to Jesus Christ. All that remains is for us to make a decision of our will to receive God's gift of relationship.
